The recent meeting between Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe and U. S. Assistant Secretary for African Affairs Johnnie Carson as a significant move towards engaging the international community, a local analyst has said.

Political and Social Analyst Dr Maxwell Hove said Zimbabwe is currently rebranding to encourage trade and investment and needs all the positive developments to attain its economic targets and the re-engagement is a positive contribution in that direction, ZBC News reported on Sunday.

He said, however, it would be more realistic if the engagement is taken to an even higher level of a summit between Mugabe and American leader Barack Obama.

This should then lead to the removal of sanctions illegally imposed on Zimbabwe by the British, the United States and their allies.

On the other hand, Hove warned that Zimbabweans should not ignore the statements issued by Carson earlier that the United States government supports the opposition and that the U. S. government and its machinery is already gearing itself to see elections in Zimbabwe.

He expressed hope that the Zimbabwe government and the U. S. State Department would continue engaging each other for the removal of the sanctions.
