Zimbabwe newly-sworn-in Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai did not join thousands of Zimbabweans at President Robert Mugabe's birthday party in Chinhoyi on Saturday, despite the media reports earlier said he had received an invitation.

Thousands of ZANU-PF supporters and officials attended the gathering in Chinhoyi, about 120 kilometers west to Zimbabwe's capital Harare, to celebrate the 85th birthday of the aging leader Mugabe, who was born in Zvimba, Mashonaland West, on February 21, 1924.

The state newspaper The Herald reported on Saturday that President Mugabe extended an invitation to the Prime Minister and in the interest of togetherness and national unity, he would grace the occasion.

The Prime Minister has not attended the event since the formation of MDC in 1999.
