European observers will not come and monitor the October presidential by-election in Zambia due to the lack of time, a senior European diplomat told a press conference here on Thursday.

Derrick Fee, head of the European Union (EU) delegation in Zambia, said that the EU has little time to organize an election monitoring mission. Instead, only 100 people from European diplomatic missions in the country will be deployed to monitor the poll.

The Southern African Development Community has said it will deploy 100 monitors to ensure a free and fair election in Zambia. The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa will also launch its observer mission next Monday.

Zambians are going to the polls on Oct.30 to choose a new leader to succeed late president Levy Mwanawasa who died on August19 after a stroke.

Four presidential candidates are currently conducting campaigns.
