Algerian police have seized five tons of marijuana products in the first quarter of this year, up 592 percent from the same period last year, local media reported Monday.

The reports said in the first three months of 2008, 1,328 people had been arrested in anti-drug operations, which were mostly held in the western part of the country.

Algeria has for years been a route for drugs produced in Africa and smuggled to the Middle East and Europe.
