Armed men opened fire randomly in Syria's northern city of Aleppo, killing one civilian, the state TV reported Friday, as hundreds of people took to the streets across Syria in fresh anti-government protests.

Separately, armed groups fired at law-enforcement members and civilians in Kafr Nubbol area in the northern province of Idleb, the TV said, without elaborating.

It added that protests in the Orontes square in the central city of Hama were dispersed in a short time.

In the city of Homs, which has become the focal point of protests after bloody incidents were reported, activists said more than 13 people were killed on Tuesday after clashes with security forces, and 30 others over the weekend in the city, which is a dangerous escalation in violence stemming from the country's four- month protests.

The Syrian government said 1,200 members of security forces and army personnel had died since the eruption of protests. According to activists, more than 1,600 civilians have died and some 10,000 have been detained.
