Two car bombings rocked Iraq's Karbala Shiite holly city on Friday, killing two people and injuring 15 others, a local police source said.

The source on condition of anonymity, told Xinhua via telephone that the cars exploded at a garage near a Shiite shrine in the northern part of Karbala, some 100 km southwest of the capital city Baghdad.

Several vehicles near the blast were damaged, said the source, adding that the police personnel and ambulances are seen rush to the scene.

On Fridays, Shiites go to the shrines for prayer and police tighten up security checks at the holy sites.

The security situation in Karbala has been improved recently. On April 14, 2007, a car bombing near a shrine in the city, killed 47 and wounded over 150.
