Iraqi security forces on Monday foiled a suicide bomb attack in downtown Baghdad after chasing a suspect who blew himself up, wounding five soldiers, an Interior Ministry source told Xinhua.

Iraqi army soldiers spotted a suspected suicide bomber at the crowded parking lot of Bab al-Mu'adham and chased him in the busy area, but the suspect blew up his explosive vest and wounded five soldiers, the source said on condition of anonymity.

Iraqi security forces sealed off the scene and dozens of security men deployed in the area for fear of a possible another attack, the source said.

Earlier in the day, the police reported the killing of four people, including three policemen and the wounding of four people in two bomb attacks in the west and south of the capital.

Violence and sporadic high-profile bomb attacks continue in the Iraqi cities despite the dramatic decrease of violence over the past few years.
