A senior military officer was killed when a planted car bomb exploded in his car in Yemeni southern port city of Aden, a security official told Xinhua on Wednesday.

Colonel Khaled al-Yafi'i, commander of a military outpost in the Aden Free Zone business park, was killed by the explosion of a planted bomb in front of his home in al-Mansoura district late Tuesday.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which was the second of its kind targeting army officials in less than a month in Aden since clashes erupted between the army and al-Qaida militants.

Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula intensified activities in southern provinces of the impoverished Arab country as its cash- stripped government was in the grip of five-month-old protests, demanding the ouster of President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
