Two people were killed and six wounded in bomb and gunfire attacks in Baghdad on Monday morning, an Interior Ministry source told Xinhua.

A civilian was killed and four injured when a booby-trapped car went off near a police patrol in Baghdad's northeastern district of al-Shaab, the source said anonymously because he is not authorized to speak to the media.

In a separate incident, gunmen using pistols fitted with silencers shot dead a policeman at a police checkpoint in al-Amil district in southwestern Baghdad, the source said.

The same police checkpoint on Sunday was the scene of another attack by unidentified gunmen who killed a policeman, the source added.

Also in the morning, a roadside bomb ripped through al-Jadriyah district in central the capital and wounded two civilians, he said.

Violence and sporadic high-profile attacks are still common in Iraq underlining the challenges that the Iraqi security forces are facing as they struggle to restore stability and normalcy in Iraqi cities several months before the departure of all American forces by the end of 2011.
