Iran hangs murderer, raper in southern city

Iran hanged a man who was charged with murder and rape in a southern city in public, the state IRIB TV website reported on Wednesday.

The criminal had raped an eight-year-old girl, robbed her golds and then killed her in February 2009, Mohammad Shabani, the Revolution and General Prosecutor of Neiriz city in Iran's southern Fars province was quoted as saying.

The report did not specify the date of hanging or the name of the criminal who was reported as a relative of the child's family.

Drug trafficking, along with some other crimes including murder, adultery, rape and armed robbery, is subject to death penalty in Iran.
