The Palestinian leadership and Islamic Hamas movement respectively welcomed and congratulated Monday Turkey's Islamic-based Justice and Development Party (AKP) for keeping its parliamentary majority in elections.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas sent a letter to Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, leader of the AKP, congratulating them for winning the elections, said the official Palestinian news agency Wafa.

Abbas also praised "Turkey's firmly established positions and its support to our people and our struggle for freedom and the establishment of the independent Palestinian state."

The victory enables Erdogan's party to get a third term. Erdogan has been in office since 2003.

In Gaza, Ismail Haneya, head of Islamic Hamas movement, a militant Palestinian group, also welcomed the victory of the AKP. In a short statement, Haneya, whose movement controls Gaza, wished progress and success OF the AKP.
