The Israeli army arrested 12 Palestinians in the West Bank, while the Palestinians accused Jewish settlers of burning a mosque near Ramallah city on Tuesday, witnesses and security sources said.

The 12 were detained in overnight raids in most of the West Bank cities, including Hamas lawmaker Ahmed Al-Hajj, who was arrested in his house in Nablus city, the security sources said.

The Israel Radio reported that the arrested Palestinians were wanted activists. Israel raids Palestinian-controlled areas in the West Bank on daily basis.

Meanwhile, the Palestinians accused Jewish settlers of setting fire to a mosque in Almughaiar village near Ramallah city.

Worshipers heading to pray at dawn found the mosque burning with Hebrew slogans of revenge, said Faraj al-Na'san, head of the village's council.

Ghassan Daghlas, an activist against Jewish settlements in the West Bank, said that the settlers burnt tires around the mosque, whose fire reached the mosque.

Villagers clashed with the Israeli army after the fire. Dozens were injured when the soldiers used tear gas and rubber bullets against the protestors, witnesses said.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has ordered the mosque to be renovated and repaired.

About three mosques were vandalized in the West Bank over the past months and last year in attacks that the Palestinians accused the settlers of being behind.
