At least five al-Qaida militants were killed and dozens of others injured Monday during a fierce fighting with the army forces in Yemen's southern province of Abyan, a local military official told Xinhua.

The army forces mobilized its troops and determined to regain control of the provincial capital of Zinjibar after fierce confrontations which resulted in the killing of five al-Qaida militants, the official told Xinhua, who asked to remain anonymous.

Units of the army forces tried many times during the past few days to break into Zinjibar city, the official said.

New reinforcements arrived in Zinjibar and will take part in regaining control of the city from the al-Qaida militants soon, he added.

Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula have gained considerable strength and took control of a number of main cities in south Yemen over the three months of political unrest.
