At least five al-Qaida militants and three civilians were killed on Monday when Yemeni air force raided a southern city occupied by al-Qaida militants earlier this week, local official told Xinhua.

He said on condition of anonymity that the air raid, which targeted the terrorist hideouts in Zinjibar, the provincial capital city of southern province of Abyan, also left dozens of al- Qaida fighters injured.

Yemeni Navy, security and armed forces and the artillerymen have been taking part in shelling al-Qaida hideouts in the coastal city since Sunday, the official added.

Meanwhile, the Defense Ministry's website reported on Monday that troops of the 25th Machined Brigade captured 10 al-Qaida fighters and seized a vehicle loaded with arms belonging to the terrorists, which was en-route to the militants in Zinjibar.

In a separate accident in the same city of Zinjibar earlier the day, al-Qaida militants ambushed a military convoy of reinforcement in its way from Aden to Zinjibar, killing at least five soldiers and injured other dozens, according to a local security official.

On Saturday, al-Qaida wing, also known as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), declared Zinjibar as the capital city of its "Islamic Emirate" in a statement the group read in front of local residents, a day after the group has almost taken over all parts of Abyan.

Abyan, some 480 km south of the capital Sanaa, is a key stronghold of resurgent AQAP which has carried out frequent attacks against Yemeni security and military personnel since 2009.
