A policeman was killed and another wounded in two bomb attacks in the city of Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province on Wednesday, a provincial police source said.

The policeman was killed when a roadside bomb exploded near his motorcycle in al-Eshreen Street in central Ramadi, some 110 km west of Baghdad, the source from Anbar's operations command said on condition of anonymity.

In a separate incident, a roadside bomb struck a police patrol in Ramadi, damaging a police vehicle and wounding a policeman aboard, the source said.

Insurgent attacks continue in the once volatile Sunni Arab area in west Baghdad that stretches through Anbar province to Iraq's western borders with Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

The province's cities and its vast desert area has been relatively calm for more than three years after Sunni tribes and anti-U.S. insurgent groups turned to cooperate with the U.S. troops and Iraqi security forces against al-Qaida network in Iraq.

Earlier in the day, the police reported the killing of a police chief in a roadside bomb explosion near his convoy in Iraq's northern city of Kirkuk, and the wounding of five people in Baghdad by a car bomb explosion that targeted a senior Iraqi army officer who escaped the attack unharmed.

Violence in the country underscores the challenges that the Iraqi security forces are facing as they struggle to restore stability and normalcy in Iraqi cities about eight months before the departure of all American forces by the end of 2011.
