Suspected al-Qaida militants ambushed a security car patrol in Yemen's southern province of Abyan on Wednesday, killing four security soldiers and wounding two others, a local security official told Xinhua.

"The al-Qaida militants used machine guns in the attack which took place in Abyan's provincial capital city of Zinjibar one hour ago, killing four soldiers and injuring two others," the official said on condition of anonymity.

He provided no further details, but said the militants fled the scene.

Abyan, some 480 km south of the Yemeni capital Sanaa, is a key stronghold of resurgent al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), which has carried out frequent attacks against the Yemeni security and military personnel since 2009.

Three-month-long anti-government protests that rocked the impoverished country over demanding an immediate end to the 33- year rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh have undermined the security and stability of Yemen.
