Turkey is hosting 252 Syrians fleeing from their unrest-hit country in southern border province of Hatay, a local official told media Saturday.

The Syrians were staying temporarily in a sports stadium and went through medical check-ups, with 18 of them being diagnosed with flu, Hatay Governor Mehmet Celalettin Lekesiz was quoted by the semi-official Anatolia news agency as saying.

The Turkish Red Crescent Aid Society was erecting tents for the refugees and sent aid materials to Hatay, said the report.

The Red Crescent said in a statement Saturday that they sent kitchen equipment for 10,000 people, two mobile kitchens, 1,075 tents, 8,500 blankets, 464 beds, 500 baby diapers and 500 portions of baby food to the province.

The organization's branches in Hatay were on alert for possible new waves of Syrian nationals in the upcoming few days, said the statement.

Unprecedented protests against Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, with whom Ankara flourished its ties, alarmed Turkey that incidents could trigger further instability across the region and harm Turkey's trade interests and security such as a refugee wave across the 877 km border.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Friday Turkey expects reforms to be carried out in Syria and supports the government's efforts to meet its people's demands.
