Hamas forces on Tuesday surrounded a house in the Gaza Strip where murderers of an Italian peace activist were believed to have been staying, sources and witnesses said.

Witnesses said the two sides exchanged fire briefly and the murderers, members of an Al-Qaeda-inspired Muslim group, refused to surrender.

Hamas' Interior Ministry said on its website that police announced an area in the middle of the Gaza Strip as a closed zone "for suspected presence of wanted people."

Sources said some wanted Jihadists, who were accused of killing Vittorio Arrigoni early Friday, were holed up in a house in Nussirat refugee camp in Central Gaza Strip.

On Sunday, Hamas authorities published photos for three people and said they were wanted for direct involvement in the kidnapping and killing of the pro-Palestinian activist.
