Syria's state TV and official news agency said Monday that the death toll rose to nine people in northern Syria, adding that security forces are still pursuing the gunmen to bring them to trial.

It said that 46 others were wounded, including 41 army officers, in an ambush near Banias city along the highway that connects the two coastal cities of Latakia and Tartous.

Quoting Ghaith Al-Sammoua, head of the National Banias Hospital, local Al-Thawra newspaper said one officer was in a critical condition and the rest are stable, adding that most of the injured were shot on their feet and arms.

He said that the gunmen also attacked an ambulance and injured the driver and a number of paramedics.

Banias, 300 km northwest of Damascus, was a scene of protest on Friday.

Syrian officials have accused what they labeled as "vandals" and "criminals" of being behind latest violent protests in the country, threatening not to tolerate such acts.
