An Iraqi veterinary professor was killed and seven people were wounded, including Iranian pilgrims in separate attacks in Baghdad on Thursday, while mortar rounds struck the heavily fortified Green Zone, an Interior Ministry source said.

Ali Abdul Hussien al-Saadi, professor of veterinary medicine in Baghdad University, was hanged to death by unidentified gunmen who stormed his house early in the day in Baghdad's western district of al-Khadraa, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Separately, a roadside bomb detonated near a bus carrying Iranian Shiite pilgrims in Taji area, just north of Baghdad, wounding six Iranians and an Iraqi, the source said.

Also in the day, gunmen using pistols fitted with silencers opened fire on a police checkpoint near al-Zawraa Park in western central Baghdad, wounding a policeman, the source added.

In addition, three mortar rounds landed the Green Zone in central Baghdad, which houses the Iraqi government offices and foreign embassies, including the U.S. embassy, he said.

"One of the rounds apparently hit the residence of Major General Hazim Dekheel, director of the military intelligence service," the source said without giving further details about casualties.

The heavily fortified Green Zone, have been frequently targeted by insurgents' mortar and rocket attacks. The roughly 10 square km zone is located on the west bank of the Tigris River which bisects the Iraqi capital.

The U.S. military did not confirm the attacks on the Green Zone yet.

Violence and sporadic high-profile bomb attacks continue in Iraqi cities despite the dramatic decrease of violence over the last three years.
