Hundreds of Jordanians on Friday gathered in front of the Egyptian Embassy in Amman, celebrating the stepping down of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

The participants, including political activists and members of the country's trade unions, voiced their happiness over Mubarak's resignation, expressing support for the "brotherly" Egyptians who succeeded in toppling Mubarak and his regime.

"This is a historic victory for the brotherly Egyptians," chanted the demonstrators in front of the embassy in Amman Friday evening.

Jordanians took to streets in other major cities, celebrating Mubarak's resignation, according to eye-witnesses.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak stepped down and the military took charge of the country on Friday, the country's Vice President Omar Suleiman said Friday afternoon.

"In these difficult times, President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak has decided to relinquish the presidency of the Republic, and charged the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces with the governance of the nation," Suleiman announced.

Mubarak's resignation came just one day after he announced that he would hand over power to the vice president without stepping down on Thursday night.
