The Israeli army killed a Palestinian and arrested five members of Islamic Hamas movement in an operation Friday in the West Bank city of Hebron, Palestinian security sources said.

Omar Al-Qawassmi, 60, was dead when he was brought to the hospital with gunshots in his body, doctors said.

The Israeli army broke into his house to arrest a Hamas activist who was released from a Palestinian National Authority ( PNA) prison Thursday, the sources added.

The Israeli army also arrested four other Hamas members after PNA President Mahmoud Abbas ordered their release on Thursday after Hamas strongly criticized the PNA for keeping the five in its prisons.

The PNA earlier said that it prefers to keep the five people in the prison to protect them from being arrested by the Israeli army.

The detention of the five Hamas members will fuel tension between Hamas and the PNA, since Hamas accuses the West Bank ruler of maintaining security liaison with Israel.

The Israeli army said the five Hamas members were involved in attacks against Jewish settlers and other Israeli targets, particularly the shooting in August when four settlers were killed on a road leading to a settlement near Hebron, an army spokesperson told Israel's Radio.
