5.3-Richter quake hits southern Iran, 3 injured: report

A relatively strong earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale hit Iran's southern province of Fars Wednesday morning and left three injured, the official IRNA news agency reported.

According to Shiraz seismological base, the tremor occurred at 9:25 a.m. local time (0555 GMT), said the report.

The quake, happened at the suburbs of Sepidan in northwest of Fars province, was felt in the provincial capital city of Shiraz and created panic among the local residents, according to IRNA.

Iran's Aid and Rescue Organization Chief Mahmoud Mozaffar told IRNA that according to the latest reports, three people were injured and no casualties were reported.

The earthquake has partially caused destruction to 17 villages, Mozaffar was quoted as saying.
