Two police officers and one Iraqi soldier were killed in separate attacks in Iraq, police said Saturday.

Gunmen shot dead Lieutenant Colonel Ihsan Fadhel, head of the communication department of Baghdad police command, while he was driving on a highway in eastern Baghdad, an Interior Ministry source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

In a separate incident, gunmen shot down another police officer in Baladiyat neighborhood in southeastern the capital, the source said.

In eastern Iraq, a local official and his wife were wounded when an explosive charge planted inside their house detonated in the morning in western Baquba, the capital city of Diyala province, some 65 km northeast of Baghdad, a provincial police source said.

In Iraq's western province of Anbar, unidentified gunmen attacked an Iraqi army checkpoint in eastern Fallujah, some 50 km west of Baghdad, late on Friday, killing a soldier and wounding two others, a source from the provincial operations command told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Violence and sporadic high-profile bomb attacks continue in the Iraqi cities despite the dramatic decrease of violence over the last three years.
