Visiting French special envoy in charge of the peace process in the Middle East Jean Claude Cousseran on Monday hailed the key role of Syria in installing peace in the Middle East, the Syrian official SANA news agency reported.

He made the remarks during his meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as they discussed regional issues, particularly the security and stability in the region.

Cousseran also delivered al-Assad message from French President Nicolas Sarkozy over the bilateral ties between Syria and France, the report said.

In July, Sarkozy appointed Cousseran as an envoy to renew talks between Syria and Israel due to the fact that his appointment would likely be accepted by both countries.

The French envoy arrived in Damascus on Tuesday in an official tour to the region including Turkey and the Palestinian territories.

Cousseran is well-versed with Middle Eastern politics. He speaks fluent Arabic and, as a former ambassador to Damascus, he is credited with Sarkozy's reversal of his predecessor Jacques Chirac's policies towards Syria.
