Australian former prime minister Kevin Rudd will fly to the United States on Friday as part of his first trip as Foreign Affairs Minister, local media reported on Monday.

Rudd will visit Washington and New York on an eight-day visit, and will meet a number of senior figures in the U.S. administration.

In a joint statement with Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Rudd said the visit underlines the high priority the government places on its relations with the U.S., Australia's key strategic partner.

He will attend the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, where he will make a statement on Australia's behalf.

Rudd will also participate in the Millennium Development Goals Summit as well as a meeting of the UN secretary-general's high- level panel on global sustainability, which deals with climate change.

Gillard appointed Rudd as Foreign Affairs Minister as part of her ministerial reshuffle over the weekend.

The new Labor government's cabinet will be sworn in on Tuesday morning.
