Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said the death sentence of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani over extramarital affairs has been suspended, local satellite Press TV reported on Wednesday.

The verdict of Ashtiani for extramarital affairs has been stopped and her case is being reviewed, said Mehmanparast, adding she was guilty of murder and extramarital affairs.

According to Mehmanparast, certain Western countries are using Ashtiani's case to exert pressure on Iran over its nuclear program, said the report.

"They (Western countries) tried to politicize the case," said Mehmanparast.

The 43-year-old Ashtiani has been on death row in Iran since 2006. Her case become internationally known in 2010 after high profile reports that she was convicted of extramarital affairs and sentenced to execution by stoning.

Iranian Judiciary said earlier that it has suspended her execution by stoning, but it has yet to take a final decision on her execution.
