An al-Qaida militant has been captured by Yemeni security forces in Lodar city in southern Abyan province, the Interior Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

The militant, identified as Jihad al-Faqih, has taken part in the latest fighting against Yemeni security forces in Lodar that began last Friday.

"Ammunition and missiles were found in al-Faqih's possession when security forces captured him in the city ... He is being subjected to investigation now," the statement said.

The arrest came one day after government forces declared regaining control over the city following a five-day battle against al-Qaida. At least 12 suspected al-Qaida militants were killed in the fighting.

Also on Wednesday, clashes between government forces and al-Qaida militants in Abyan's capital city of Zinjibar left four soldiers dead and one injured.

Abyan province is believed to be a stronghold of al-Qaida forces in the Arabian Peninsula that has witnessed a string of deadly attacks allegedly carried out by the group since earlier this year.

The Yemeni government has intensified security operations and air raids against terrorist groups after the Yemen-based al-Qaida claimed responsibility for an attempted attack on a U.S. passenger plane bound for Detroit last year.
