A Palestinian was killed and an Israeli soldier was lightly injured on Monday evening during clashes in southeast Gaza Strip, an Israeli army spokesman and Palestinian sources said.

The spokesman told Xinhua that an Israeli army force noticed a group of Palestinian militants trying to plant a roadside bomb near the fence between southeast Gaza Strip and Israel.

The spokesman said that the force had immediately opened fire at the group, killing one Palestinian, and the others ran away. The death of the Palestinian man was not confirmed by medics or security sources.

Meanwhile, an Israeli soldier was lightly injured when a Palestinian militant opened fire at an Israeli army force near the fence of the borders between the Gaza Strip and Israel, according to the spokesman.

Palestinian sources told Xinhua that Bassam al-Daghma, 22 years old, was killed after he was shot by Israeli soldiers during exchange of fire in southeast Gaza Strip.

The sources added that al-Daghma is a member of al-Quds Brigades, the armed wing of Islamic Jihad (Holy War) movement. The sources added that he was left bleeding in the area until he died.

The clashes began when militants fired a homemade projectile at Israeli army vehicles patrolling the area of the borders between Israel and the Gaza Strip. Following the clashes, the force stormed the area.
