One soldier of the Turkish security forces was killed in an attack staged by rebels of the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) in east Turkey on Tuesday, the semi- official Anatolia news agency reported.

A group of the PKK members opened fire at the Turkish soldiers who were carrying out a military operation in Yalinca region in Gurpinar town of Van province, leaving one soldier dead, said the report.

It added that the Turkish security forces had launched a large- scale operation in fight against the PKK in this region.

Recent months have seen more attacks from the PKK as the weather warmed up.

Listed as a terrorist organization by the Turkish government, the United States and the European Union, the PKK took up arms in 1984 in order to create an ethnic homeland in southeastern Turkey.

Some 40,000 people have been killed in conflicts involving the PKK for the past over two decades.
