PKK rocket attack injures eight in Turkey

Militants of the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) staged a rocket attack on a local police office and commando unit in southeast Turkey late on Friday, injuring eight people, Turkish media reported Saturday.

Five police officers and three troops were wounded in the attack occurred at around 10:00 p.m. (2000 GMT) on Friday night in Pervari town of Siirt Province, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported.

A full-scale operation is under way in the region to capture the militants, the report said.

Listed as a terrorist organization by the Turkish government, the United States and the European Union, the PKK took up arms in 1984 to create an ethnic homeland in southeastern Turkey.

Some 40,000 people have been killed in conflicts involving the PKK for the past two decades.
