A Palestinian militant was killed and at least another one was injured Tuesday morning in clashes with Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip, witnesses and medical sources said.

A statement by the Islamic Jihad movement said the fighter, 23-year-old Marwan Al-Jadba, was a member of its military wing and was killed when a group of fighters was on a mission to attack Israeli forces.

A hospital official said ambulances have been dispatched to evacuate the dead and injuries "that might be more than one."

The incident took place in central Gaza Strip, to the east of Al-Burij refugee camp adjacent to the electric fence that separates Palestinian areas from Israel.

An Israeli army statement said troops targeted a group of Palestinian militants who were planting explosives near the border.
