Iran's Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani criticized North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) for neglecting the basic needs of the Afghan people, local Press TV reported on Sunday.

Referring to the "growing rates of insecurity" and the increased "presence of the Taliban," Larijani said "NATO forces are not doing their part as efficient as they ought to."

He made the remarks upon returning from a five-day trip to Tokyo on Saturday.

In January, the UN representative to Afghanistan Kai Eide, referring to the growing strength of the Taliban insurgency, said that "negative trends" may make the country's situation unmanageable.

The NATO launched operation to remove the safe haven to al- Qaida and Taliban and to end their use of the Afghan territory as a base of operations for terrorist activities.
