Iraqi security forces capture gang accused of slaughtering 8 family members

Iraqi security forces said Monday they have captured four gangsters who are accused of killing eight people from one family in a town southeast of Baghdad.

"A police force from Baghdad Command detained four suspects with their silencer pistols in the town of al-Madain, some 30 km southeast of Baghdad," Baghdad Police Command said in a statement.

It said the suspects are members of a gang believed to be responsible for the killing of eight family members in a house in an area near al-Wahda, the statement said.

The capture of the gang came 24 hours after they carried out the latest crime in Wahda area.

The suspects confessed their crime of killing the eight family members, along with other crimes they have committed, the statement added.

It said the captured gang is an organized group which tasked with assassinations with silencer pistols, but the statement could not tell what were the motives of the attacks or who is behind them.

Violence continue in Baghdad and other Iraqi cites ahead of the country's parliamentary elections on March 7.

U.S. and Iraqi officials frequently said they expected an increased violence before the elections, which millions of Iraqis are expected to turn out to elect 325 lawmakers out of over 6,000 candidates for the next parliament.
