Two U.S. helicopter pilots were killed in an accident near a U.S. base airfield in northern Iraq Sunday, the U.S. military said.

"The aircraft made a hard landing inside the base," the U.S. force said in a statement, adding "there were no enemy forces present and no hostile fire was reported."

The accident is under investigation, it added.

Since the war in 2003, around 4,370 U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq, according to the figures of the U.S. force.
