Lebanese Foreign Ministry stressed on Monday that the biggest challenge to UN Security Council resolution 1701 "comes from Israel and its violation of the resolution since 2006," the country's state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported.

"The ministry media office issued a statement responding to the latest announcement of the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs, ambassador Jeffrey Feltman, concerning repetitive Israeli threats against Lebanon," said the report.

The Foreign Ministry statement stressed that "it's important for the ministry to call for attention that the biggest challenge of resolution 1701 comes from Israel itself as it has violated the resolution more than 6,000 times since 2006."

Feltman's Sunday announcement condemned Hezbollah of violating the UN resolution 1701 by smuggling weapons into the south.

UN resolution 1701 ended the 34-day war between Israel and the Shiite armed group Hezbollah in 2006, and reinforced the UN Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to conduct peacekeeping missions in south Lebanon.

The UN resolution demanded that Hezbollah be disarmed. However, Hezbollah, holding well-equipped and trained militants, has made it clear that its arms are not up for debate.
