A policeman was killed in a bomb attack and eight decomposed bodies discovered near the once volatile city of Fallujah on Sunday, a local police source said.

A roadside bomb went off near a police patrol in the town of Garma near the city of Fallujah, some 50 km west of Baghdad, killing a policeman and wounding two others, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The blast destroyed a police vehicle, damaging several nearby civilian cars and buildings, the source said.

Separately, the police discovered eight decomposed bodies buried in a mass grave outside Fallujah, the source added.

"The bodies were badly decomposed because they have been buried for several years when the city was under control of insurgent groups," he said.

The bodies were transported to the morgue of the main hospital in the city which was the main stronghold for insurgency against the U.S. troops and Iraqi government since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.

Fallujah is in Anbar province which has been relatively calm for more than two years after Sunni tribes and anti-U.S. insurgent groups turned to cooperate with the U.S. troops and Iraqi security forces against al-Qaida in Iraq network.
