A policeman was killed and three others were injured in a motorcycle bomb explosion at a police station in a town in the volatile province of Diyala on Monday, a provincial police source said.

The explosives-packed motorcycle was first found near a house in eastern Maqdadiyah, a town some 100 km northeast of Baghdad, and was defused by explosives experts before transferred to the police station, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

More explosives were apparently left undetected by the experts in the motorcycle, the source said.

Also in the day, the Iraqi security forces detained five suspects, defused an explosive charge and seized a cache of weapons and explosives in separate operations across the province.

Diyala province, which stretches from the eastern edges of Baghdad to the Iranian border east of the country, has long been a stronghold for al-Qaida militants and other insurgent groups since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 despite repeated U.S. and Iraqi military operations against them.
