An Egyptian soldier was shot dead by a Palestinian sniper on borders with the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, Egypt's Nile TV reported.

Ahmed Shaban, 21-year-old, was killed when some Palestinians opened fire at a guarding tower overlooking the frontier, a security source said.

Egyptian security forces and Palestinians clashed at the Gaza border over the delay of an aid convoy with the British-based Viva Palestina group into the Gaza Strip. The incident also left at least five Palestinians wounded.

Scores of Palestinian youths on the Gaza side threw stones at the Egyptian border guards, according to the source.

On Tuesday night, clashes erupted between the Egyptian security forces and the aid activists after Cairo refused to allow 55 out of the 198 trucks with the aid convoy to pass through Rafah crossing citing that they are carrying commercial goods.

Egyptian authorities have earlier denied the convoy entry into the Arab country from the Red Sea, insisting it use the Mediterranean port of El-Arish.
