Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Tuesday called for the nuclear disarmament of the United States and Israel, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

"The U.S. government owns nearly 8,000 atomic warheads and it should be disarmed and its corrupt tail, the Zionist regime (of Israel), has about 400 atomic warheads which should be disarmed as well," Ahmadinejad said when addressing people in Shiraz, the capital of Iran's southern province of Fars.

Earlier on the day, Ahmadinejad rejected the U.S. claims that Tehran was making nuclear bombs.

"(You should) know that if we wanted to build bombs, we would have enough courage to announce that we were making bombs," Press TV quoted him as saying on Tuesday.

The United States and its Western allies accused Iran of secretly developing nuclear weapons under the disguise of developing civilian nuclear power. Iran has denied the accusation and stressed that its nuclear program is only for peaceful purpose.
