A car bomb struck a crowd at a police recruitment center in Mosul, the capital city of Nineveh province, on Sunday, killing a recruiter and wounding 20 others, a provincial police source said.

A booby-trapped car, parked outside the recruitment center at the Kokejly area in eastern Mosul, detonated at about 6:00 a.m. local time (0300 GMT) when dozens of young men were gathering outside the center to sign up to join the Iraqi security forces, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Iraqi security forces sealed off the area as ambulances and some police vehicles were transferring the victims to the city hospitals, he said.

Mosul, some 400 km north of Baghdad, is said to be one of the last strongholds of insurgent groups and al-Qaida fighters in the war-torn country.

Nineveh province has been the scene of major security crackdowns by U.S. troops and Iraqi security forces to uproot the insurgency which erupted shortly after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
