United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahayan said Monday his country will continue to provide full support for the development of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in all fields.

At a meeting with GCC Secretary General Abdul Rahman Al-Attiya, the UAE president also expressed wishes that Kuwait would succeed in chairing an upcoming GCC summit in the middle of this month, the official news agency WAM reported.

For his part, Al-Attiya said the president is playing a "critical" role in advancing the regional bloc towards welfare and prosperity for its citizens.

"The UAE, under the leadership of Sheikh Khalifa, has been and is still the prime supporter of GCC resolutions and their implementation for the sake of consolidating joint cooperation," he was quoted as saying.

According to WAM, Al-Attiya also lauded proactive measures taken by the UAE to counter the impact of the international financial crisis and cushion its economy.

The GCC, a regional trade bloc comprising Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, will hold an annual summit in Kuwait on Dec. 14 and 15.
