The city of Stavropol in northern Greece announced Thursday that a reward of 5,000 euros (7,450 U.S. dollars) would be offered for any information leading to the capture of the killer of an endangered two-year-old brown bear.
The little male bear was found shot dead with his front legs cut off in the Rhodopi mountain range almost two weeks ago, an atrocious act which shocked the local community.
"The person responsible for this act, according to the first data, seems to suffer from a severe psychological disorder, and must be mentally deranged and a danger to our community," said an official notice.
During the process of solving the case, Stavropol has obtained help from the police, local hunting clubs and ecological organizations like "Arcturos," which estimated that there were only 20 to 30 bears left in this area and a total of 250 brown bears nationwide.
Under the laws of Greece, the killing of an endangered species in this manner is punished by imprisonment.
