U.S. President Barack Obama paid a half-an-hour visit to Sultan Hassan Mosque on Thursday during his visit to Cairo.

The U.S. president was accompanied by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Mrs. Eman Abdel Fattah, an Egyptian American who voted for Obama at the U.S. embassy in Egypt last year during the presidential election.

The construction on the mosque started in 1356 AD and ended seven years later. Serving as a mosque and religious school for all four juristic branches of Sunni Islam, it is known as the most compact and comprehensive Islamic monument in Cairo.

Obama had a close look at the mosque before he headed for Cairo University to deliver a long-anticipated speech to the Islamic world.
