At least 28 Iranians were killed on Monday in a bus accident on their way to visit religious shrines in neighboring Iraq, Iranian state television reported.

Nine others were seriously injured when the bus carrying the pilgrims crashed into a building in the western province of Ilam near the Iraqi border, the report said.

A local police official was quoted as saying that high speed and mechanical problems were the main causes of the deadly accident.

Iran has high fatalities in road accidents in the region. Approximately 4,000 road accidents occur in Iran every year and the majority of road accidents are caused by reckless driving and vehicle malfunction.
