Papua New Guinea (PNG)'s police have said they are investigating a plot to assassinate Prime Minister Michael Somare.

PNG Police Commissioner Gari Baki revealed the investigation into a possible assassination attempt after he banned a public demonstration against the prime minister's re-election, Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio reported Friday.

"Considering the fact that it's associated with the demonstration, that's why we are taking it so seriously," Baki said.

The prime minister's spokeswoman Betha Somare said the prime minister has made no changes to his schedule.

"I'm sure that the police are taking precautions but for us it' s business as usual," she said.
However, organizers of the demonstration against the prime minister's re-election said they still plan to stage a rally.

Somare was re-elected by MPs as prime minister for a second successive term in August. Eighty-six out of 108 MPs voted for Somare.
