One person was killed and nine others wounded in an explosion Tuesday at a compressor plant on Russia's Yamal peninsula, northwestern Siberia, a spokesman for the local emergencies administration told Itar-Tass news agency.

Earlier reports said ten people were injured in the blast.

The spokesman said the plant was still under construction and not linked to gas mains. There was no fire followed the explosion.

The accident occurred during tests at the Baidaratskaya compressor plant at about 11:05 a.m. Moscow time (0705GMT).

Two helicopters carrying rescuers have been sent to the site, Itar-Tass reported.
