Backgrounder: French cabinet shifts after Lagarde appointed to IMF post

French President Nicolas Sarkozy announced Wednesday a minor government reshuffle ahead of Finance Minister Christine Lagarde's departure to head the U.S-.based International Monetary Fund.

Present Budget Minister Francois Baroin, also the government spokesman, was nominated to succeed Lagarde, which has resulted in shifts in other ministerial posts. The following are the major nominations made by Sarkozy:

Francois Baroin, Minister of Economy, Finance and Industry;

Valerie Pecresse, Minister for the Budget, Public Accounts, Civil Service, State Reform and Government Spokesman;

Francois Sauvadet, Minister of Public Service;

Laurent Wauquiez, Minister for Higher Education and Research;

Jean Leonetti, Minister of European Affairs;

Thierry Mariani, Minister of Transport;
