Latin America has become a partner of growing importance for Austria and the European Union in recent years, the Austrian Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.

The ministry made this statement after a roundtable on Latin America in Vienna, which gathered former heads of state and political leaders from Colombia, Chile, Uruguay, Spain and the Organization of American States.

The meeting provided an excellent opportunity for the two continents to explore new cooperation, Austrian Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger told the opening of the roundtable.

He stressed that their long-term goal should focus on the economic front.
