Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and his visiting Estonian counterpart Andrus Ansip met in Gdansk of northern Poland on Monday to discuss Eastern Partnership, the EU budget and the EU strategy towards the Baltic Sea region.

Ansip said after the meeting that Polish priorities during the EU presidency were "a true replica of what Estonia expects from the EU."

"Poland and Estonia have always managed to harmonize their interests in the EU and at the same time act in favor of the Union 's overall interest," Tusk said at a joint press conference with Ansip.

Tusk said he was pleased that Ansip shared Poland's concern for the future of Cohesion Policy. "Our two countries will see to it that the Cohesion Policy is not weakened by crisis and remain one of the pillars of EU integration and growth," Tusk was quoted as saying by the local media.

The Estonian prime minister confirmed that his country's objectives in the EU were identical with Poland's goals. "In our view the Cohesion Policy has been a real success for all EU new members. We are very much interested in continuing this success story," Ansip said.

Both men gave very high marks to the state of bilateral relations. "Our cooperation in the EU, NATO and many other organizations has been very fruitful indeed. Poland can count on our support during the presidency," Ansip said.

He encouraged Poland to join the euro zone. "Our citizens are satisfied with the euro. We are waiting for you."

In recent months, Tusk met with the prime ministers of the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Britain, Sweden, France and the heads of major EU institutions. The meetings were part of the preparations for the Polish presidency of the EU starting on July 1.
